Our Team
We, the Go-Gobies Team, are a group of motivated graduate students at Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, University of California, Santa Barbara. We are glad to work with Fish and Wildlife Service in Ventrua office to promote the conservation of the tidewater goby. The project itself is also an a group master's thesis project of Bren School.
Alexander Prescott, Project Manager
MESM2018 student, Bren School of Environmental Science & Management
Alexander Prescott graduated cum laude from CUNY Hunter College, receiving a BA with departmental honors in Environmental Studies: Management and Policy and a Roosevelt House Public Policy Certification. His professional and academic career in New York City fueled his passion for studying urban & environmental interactions. Working with the Lower East Side Ecology Center, he helped small business owners improve their energy, waste, and water infrastructure and sustainability practices. He is in the MESM 2018 master’s degree program at the Bren School, specializing in pollution prevention and remediation.

Natalie Shahbol, Data Manager
MESM2018 student, Bren School of Environmental Science & Management
Natalie Shahbol graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and a minor in Environmental Engineering. During her undergraduate career, she was involved in several research projects through UCLA’s Institute of Environment and Sustainability. She spent a year working on a two-part research project to improve water quality in the Compton Creek Watershed located in Greater Los Angeles. Natalie and her team members conducted detailed research on water quality in Compton Creek and gave recommendations to the State Water Resources Control Board for watershed management. Her team also taught an after school program to high school students on watershed science and environmental justice. Natalie was also a part of a research team where she characterized beach monitoring programs in California to give recommendations on standardizing these programs statewide. Natalie also recently spent a summer at the Public Policy Institute of California’s Water Policy Center working on an urban water research project to understand and learn from California’s recent drought.

Michael Patton, Data Manager

Michael Patton is studying Pollution Prevention and Remediation at the Bren School, where he is interested in the interface between anthropogenic activities and coastal ecosystems. He is originally from North Carolina where he completed a BS in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Upon graduation, he worked for the Nature Conservancy Office in the U.S Virgin Islands where he helped monitor and research endangered species present in the area. Michael was interested in this project because of his passion for coastal areas and the amazing creatures like the Goby that reside there.

Chester is specializing in Coastal Marine Resource Management at Bren with a focus in Strategic Environmental Communication and Media. Chester attended Davidson College where he graduated with a BS in Environmental Studies. After Davidson, Chester worked at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, where he collected fisheries data and wrangled sharks. Chester then went on to work as an environmental consultant at Versar Inc. in Maryland, where he focused on projects relating to fisheries and water quality management. At Versar, Chester developed sampling techniques and produced deliverables for clients like the US Navy, Army Corps of Engineers, and DC Metropolitan Council of Governments. Outside of work Chester enjoys fly-fishing and baking sourdough.

During college, she was the project manager of two years' research on the impacts of climate change and phosphorus limit on representative phytoplankton in East China Sea. She also spent six months on the exchanged project with Lund University, Sweden, studying Water Resources Engineering.

Arturo Keller, Faculty Advisor
Professor, Bren School of Environmental Science & Management
Dr. Keller's research focuses on the sustainable use of chemicals and materials in our modern society, by understanding and quantifying their potential impacts, and seeking ways to minimize impacts while achieving the benefits. He is particularly interested in emerging materials, such as nanoparticles and biochemicals, for which little information is available. He also does work at large scales to design better management strategies for common chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides.
